Market Reports (February 2016)

Latest prices 26th February 2015

Cattle

Clean cattle are much the same trade as in previous weeks, with base prices on R4Ls achieving prices in the region of 340p/kg. The seasonal easing of the trade thus far, has been measured and the improvement in the exchange rate must be helping somewhat as retailers are complaining about a real lack of consumer demand.
Cows remain at similar levels, with R grade culls at 220-230p/kg. If you want to get cows away to create space ahead of calving or lambing get in touch as we are able to get them lifted within a week in most cases. We have a range of store cattle for sale on our website, please get in touch if you are looking to buy or sell. Herd of 50 Luing cows wanted for a private buyer, please get in touch in the strictest confidence.

Sheep

The hogget trade in the last week remained firm around 400-410p/kg with well fleshed lambs most keenly sort after. With plenty of New Zealand lamb on offer there must be quite a lot of pressure on abattoirs to maintain margins. Buyers are seemingly happy to take any number of lambs offered, but are not really falling over themselves to compete for sheep.
The pound continues to weaken against the Euro and is now up to 79p. Great news for anyone who is getting their SFP paid in Euros. The very earliest spring lambs are beginning to come forward in the deep south of England and are attracting base price bids of £5/kg. Lets hope this continues!
Rumour has is it that one abattoir south of the border has been charging up to £6 to clip very dirty sheep which seems extraordinary. Some of the abattoirs have different clipping specifications, please get in touch with your local fieldsman if you have any questions.
We expect a slight improvement in the price for next week, particularly for lighter weights, with numbers continuing to diminish all the time. We have a wide variety of outlets for all types of sheep, not just the pretty ones, so please get in touch if you have heavies, blackies, mules or lights.

Organics

Organic base prices remain a stand on once again with prices up to 380p/kg. More are needed. Organic store cattle are wanted and we have three lots for sale.
Organic lambs remain extremely thin on the ground and we have been told to buy as many as we can lay our hands on!
