Market Reports (March 2016)

Latest Prices 18th March 2016

Cattle

The general easing in the cattle trade continues and base prices for Scottish cattle are in the 330’s p/kg. English cattle are back at 319p/kg. There is little sign of any improvement likely in the next few weeks and the major multiples are discounting beef heavily with Morrison’s promoting joints of topside at £5/kg. As a result of the disappointing finished trade and the delayed SFP the store trade is under pressure.
Cows are the shining light at the moment and the specialist cow processors are hungry for numbers, with the exchange rate fuelling demand, with base prices standing firm around 225 on the R.
Hill grazing available for cows and calves. Available from Spring until mid-October. Hawick area. Cattle will be looked daily. £3.50/week/outfit. Please phone the office for more information.
Dairy grazing/store cattle finishing/finishing B & B opportunity available.
Excellent grazing on young leys available for cattle at Biggar as well as housing for finishing cattle.
Please phone the office for further details.

Sheep

The hogget price has firmed in the last week with prices in the region of 415p/kg. The next fortnight will be critical to determining the sheep trade in the coming months as consumer demand post Easter can be variable. ‘Lamb’ legs in the supermarkets are being promoted as low as £4/kg for Easter so somebody is losing a fortune on these prime cuts as they are costing more at the farm gate!
Spring lamb prices have started off brightly and base prices are in excess of 550p/kg in the last week. With lambing underway will producers who finish lambs early please be aware of two critical dates as demand and exchange rates are likely to remain favourable until then.
1. 6th June… The Holy Muslim festival of Ramadan.
2. 23rd June… EU Referendum.
If you are going to target early sales and the Ramadan festival it may be worth considering leaving some lambs entire and taking advantage of the superior growth rates.

Organics

With large numbers of producers having surrendered their organic status, organic cattle are still relatively scarce and prices are holding firm around 365p/kg. Organic lambs are also very short and are achieving a minimum of a 30p/kg premium. More are needed.
