Market Reports (April 2016)

Latest prices 29th April 2016

Finished cattle have largely stood on in price over the last 7 days with well fleshed beasts achieving between 320-330p/kg. Cattle uplift is around a fortnight in most cases so waiting lists are considerably shorter than this time last year, so you would think that retail demand must be relatively firm. Hopefully when numbers start to ease, prices will have to rise.
Cow numbers are easing as is normal for the time of the year. More are needed every week to meet demand.  OTMS bulls wanted for quick uplift, with well fleshed bulls in the last week paid at full weight to around 180p/kg, with no abattoir off takes. Finished dairy bred bulls wanted. Shorthorn bulling heifers for sale, please get in touch with us if you are looking for any.

Hogget prices have eased significantly in the live ring during the last week, with deadweight prices holding in most cases. Prices have ranged from 380-415p/kg, back around 10p on the week.  With numbers winding down many of the abattoirs are cutting throughput and/or switching to processing imported NZ NSL. Meated hogget’s are definitely at a premium north of the border.

The first orders for new season lambs are coming in with prices back significantly on where we had anticipated. An over supply of hogget’s in the South of England has driven prices as low as 430p/kg. North of England base prices are in the region of 470p/kg. By way of a comparison, new season lambs in Ireland are 400p/kg. With numbers coming forward still comparatively low, there is a lack of critical mass for exporters. The Euro exchange is back to 77p, but it is still significantly more favourable than the same period last year so lets hope we see prices recover once we get into May.

With the weather set to recover next week hopefully we will see some grass growth. Ewes and lambs look good value and we have several great lots for sale. We also have some outstanding hoggs with lambs at foot which will be ready to move in the next fortnight.

To support sheep producers in improving their business performance we will be providing all members with lamb growth rates along with your kill sheets and single farm reports on all 2016 new season lamb. We see this as a huge step forward and a very valuable management tool, offering our members a service that no other routes to the market provide at present.

Please will all sheep producers contact the office or your fieldsman with your 2015 and 2016 lambing dates so we can provide you with the most accurate information.

Clean organic cattle still look a super trade at 365p/kg with processors paying a strong premium just to maintain market share. Organic hogget’s are back slightly in line with the conventional trade with base prices varying from 430-450p/kg, still remarkably good for the time of year.  Approximately 6 Organic Luing or Shorthorn yearling heifers wanted.
