Market Reports (September 2016)

Friday 23rd September 2016

Beef

The finished cattle trade has eased slightly in the last week and the peak in prices has probably passed. With numbers coming forward in reasonable numbers the prices for R grade cattle are in the low 370’s for Scotch cattle.
With cows now coming forward in stronger numbers the price has eased 10p/kg which is expected at this time of the year.
Finished young bulls wanted, well fleshed types have been achieving prices up to 360p/kg, more needed every week.
Store cattle are a good trade, strong forward cattle needed and for sale, particularly Autumn born cattle which are proving difficult to find.

Sheep

Demand for well fleshed lambs remains buoyant with processors keen to maintain throughput and secure numbers. Prices have been a stand on once again with base prices in the region of 380-390p/kg, 60p/kg better than last year, or £12.60/head in real money on a 20kg carcass! In all seriousness though, this is where the lamb price needs to be if producers are to make a decent living and reinvest for the long term. Whilst a slight easing in the trade is likely in the short term, particularly on poorly covered lambs we expect the trade to remain firm going forward, particularly with no likely let up in the strength of Sterling. December and the run up to Christmas is traditionally a good time to market lambs, with strong demand from Europe, please consider targeting feeding lambs for then.
The mild damp conditions we are experiencing at the moment are boosting grass growth at the moment and April born lambs are really on the thrive, with producers having to draw lambs regularly to keep on top of them. More standard weight, finished lambs wanted, please phone the office or your local fieldsman if you think you may have some ready.
Good batches of store lambs also wanted, field lambs, mule wedders and blackies with frame. We still have a couple of good batches of gimmers for sale. Mules, Suffolk X’s and Texel X’s.
Please phone the office ASAP if you want one of the few remaining spaces at the Lamb Supply Chain Conference on the 5th October in Edinburgh.

Organics

The organic cattle trade is a stand on once again, with the best cattle at 420p/kg. Lambs are still achieving a small premium of about 10p/kg, achieving base prices in the region of 390-400p. Organic store lambs wanted. Short and long keep.
Organic store cattle wanted and for sale.
