Market Reports (August 2017)

Friday 25th August 2017

Surely clean cattle are right at the top now with clean beasts to 385p and Angus to 415p. Some firms have tried to unsuccessfully pull the trade but this seems to have led to mass gazumping. The balance of trade remains weighted in the farmers favour, with supply tight as everyone concentrates their efforts on harvest when the weather permits.

Cows remain an excellent trade with numbers beginning to come forward, particularly extensively grazed dairy types. More needed every week. Please watch that your suckler bred types don’t get too fat, we are starting to get several R5’s coming through.

More cows needed for a variety of outlets, both harder and well fleshed types.

Store cattle for sale,
Forward Shorthorns, Limousin, Angus and Simental bullocks, small herd of Shorthorn cows and calves. Charolais weaned calves.

Finished lambs in the last week have realised between 410-415p/kg base which looks a really good trade as the week has gone on. Demand for sheep is really very mixed with firms competing fiercely for lambs which hit spec for the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha which runs from the 31st August until the 4th September.
Exporters are dominating the trade with the Euro sitting at 92p and 16-19kg R2-3Ls really sort after. Home market processors are generally speaking playing catch up, though it will be interesting to see if this changes once the festival is over. How the trade responds in the next fortnight will go a long way to determining the fortunes of the upland lamb trade this Autumn.

Please make sure that you shut your lambs off grass/feed the night before uplift to ensure they arrive at the abattoir in a clean condition, ready to enter the food chain. Providing they have access to water to hydrate our trials show that there is no loss in carcass weight. Farm Stock has a reputation for supplying good quality, in spec lambs and your co-operation is very much appreciated.
