Market Reports (February 2018)

Friday 16th February 2018

In the last week, base prices for Scottish beasts eased two pence to 368-370p. The next move in price will almost certainly be up as the processors were all on the phone this week looking for beasts. The tipping point has been reached, and the price had clearly been pulled back too far.

The cow price continues in a similar positive vein, with numbers easing. More needed. Remember we pick up quickly and pay promptly by BACS in 7 days. Weekly pick ups, every Wednesday for dairy types out of the main areas.

We now have regular batches of Scottish black and white bull calves available, on and off milk and from TB4s farms. Please get in touch to discuss the options available.

Store cattle wanted for Scottish finishers in the Borders and Aberdeenshire.

What an absolute belter of a trade! Demand for hogget’s marches on and on with no sign whatsoever of any abating in price. Base prices kicked off at 440p with the trade rising as the week has gone on with big fleshy types to 460p base. 22kg Blackie tup hoggets to £99… Remarkable!! With several outlets contractually unable to buy out of the live ring, we are getting demand from across the UK for hogget’s direct off farm. The chance of this hogget trade blowing up is now getting more and more remote, with firm supermarket orders confirmed from now until Easter, a time when demand usually rises. After a couple of poor years, the store lamb finishers are finally having a good turn, hopefully this should have a positive impact on confidence at next Autumns store sales.

With strong sheep trading close to £100 it may well be worth consigning bottom draws of ewe lambs to slaughter. Latest HMRC data reports the lowest volume of sheep meat imports into the UK for 20 years, 11% lower on the year, with quarter one of 2018 likely to follow a similar trend. January slaughtering’s are up 20% on the year so demand is clearly very high.

With Maedi Visna in the headlines we have a couple of producers with MV Accredited and MV Screened Ewe Lambs provisionally available for Summer 2018. Please speak to the office for further information.

More Hogget’s urgently needed for next week satisfy demand from 6 processors who are competing hard for numbers.

Organic clean cattle to 450p/kg. Interestingly, this week last year, organic cattle were averaging 395p. So organic producers are a good 50p/kg better off, or £175head on a 350kg carcass. Organic hogget’s began at 460p/kg, with the trade firming. The trade has jumped significantly for next week, and we have very firm demand. Please phone your fieldsman for the latest prices.
