Market Reports (April 2018)

Friday 20th April 2018

As numbers tighten further, clean cattle have crept up yet again with competition keen. R4Ls are in the vicinity of 375p/kg. Strong black cattle are a good trade and the angus premium is worth approximately 30p. Shorthorns to 383p. More clean cattle needed for up to 6 different processors and remember we pay by BACS in 7 days.

The dearth of cull cows continues for yet another week and this situation is unlikely to change anytime soon. Grass growth can not come quickly enough for everyone. Cull cows to 315p/kg, with best cows well in excess of £1200. We have outlets for the best cows as well as extreme dairy types, Jerseys and foreign cows. Please speak to your local fieldsman or the office if you want to discuss the various options available.

With grass growing we have plenty of store cattle available.

Hogget numbers and quality continue to fall in equal measure. Average weights are just a bit over 17kg and we are handling lot of O grade sheep. Base prices for standard weights have eased to 560p/kg as the week has closed. Good sheep are still keenly sort after but the crazy prices seen last week of over £6/kg have stifled demand. More hogget’s needed.

We are moving light weight hogget’s but we need to know about them in advance as they have to be slaughtered on specific days. We are currently handling good numbers of sheep out of the Islands and out of the North of Scotland, please speak to Brian for further information about this.

FSS Co-op Averages Av wt kg Gold Green Black Red Blue

Finished organic cattle are much the same, with up to 425p achieved in the last week. Organic hogget’s up to 600p in the last seven days. More needed.  base as the week has closed. More hogget’s urgently needed.
