Market Reports (April 2018)

Friday 27th April 2018

Clean cattle are keenly competed for with many finishers caught up with arable work and unable to find the time to draw cattle. Base prices are in the region of 375-380p, with Angus 400-405p in the last week.

Cull cows are 310-315p/kg base, with all types keenly sort after. Weekly pickups out of the Borders, Central belt, South West and the North. Please speak to your local fieldsman about the variety of available outlets.

Store cattle available, and the trade remains positive despite the shortage of fodder and rising cereal prices. Breeding stock are slightly easier with cash flows tight

As one might expect for the end of April, hogget quality is extremely variable with several producers taking advantage of the buoyant prices and dipping into the bottom end of their ewe lambs. After one of the worst Springs in recent memory, a shortage of breeding stock is widely predicted for the Autumn, so it may be wise to not cull too hard.

Base prices for conventional hogget’s 560-580p, with lights harder to shift at 450p. Little demand for super lights under 12.5kg. Ewes with lambs at foot available.

If you have sheep approaching finish, please remember Ramadan kicks off on Tuesday 15th May. We will hopefully get an idea of orders for the festival next week.

The weather may have improved slightly but the lamb & ewe losses have not in many cases. Speaking to our members, there are some desperately sad stories out there. Please remember you are never alone and you are only a phone call or a text away from an understanding ear.
