Market Reports (October 2018)

Cattle

Prime cattle are still much the same as in previous weeks with Christmas kills about to commence. Angus cattle in firm demand with prices in the region of 410p. Please be aware that some of these Angus for some supermarket specifications have to be slaughtered before their 28month birthday. Conventional scotch to 374-380p, with the trade finely balanced.

Cows have eased slightly but we are moving them relatively quickly with the majority moving within the week of being booked. More needed, prices to 285p on the R.

Store cattle available. All weights and sizes. Suckled beef calves available.

Lambs

Deadweight lamb prices in the last week, 370-375p/kg, a stand on from the previous weeks. Numbers coming forward are definitely easing back. We anticipate if this continues then prices will have to firm, though this still may be a few weeks off but there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel! Please keep an eye on lambs becoming over fat, particularly those coming off feeding.  The biggest issue we have had in the last week is loads getting put back because of abattoir breakdowns and this seems across the board at all the processors. Abattoirs up and down the country are running at full tilt right now and there isn’t much slack in the system when stoppages occur.

We have firm orders for lights for the end of November onwards. Spec subject to confirmation but please get in touch with your fieldsman if you think you may want space allocation.

Long keep store lambs needed.

With plenty of lush wet grass available for lambs please ensure your lambs are shut off feed overnight before transport to ensure they arrive clean enough to be slaughtered. Belly clipping now required at some processors. Please be aware of this and speak to your fieldsman if you have any queries.
