Market Report 25-10-2013

With Irish and English beef providing serious competition at seriously discounted prices, the Scottish Premium is likely to come under serious pressure in the coming months. With R4L cattle trading at around 410p/kg we would urge members to consider acting sooner rather than later. Hopefully an onset of cooler weather will boost consumer demand for mince and generate some uplift in demand for the processing sector. If you are culling cows now at scanning, or housing please contact us as we have good outlets for all sorts. Store cattle remain a blistering trade and are readily sold so if you have any to sell, look at our very competitive commission rates and please give us a call on 01750 723366.

The light at the end of the tunnel is hopefully getting brighter with factories holding or increasing prices with us during the last week. Base prices for standard lambs have ranged from 370-380p, a great deal more encouraging than this week last year, when R3L’s were trading around 345-350p/kg. Grass supplies remain plentiful in the mild conditions, but the deluge of rain in recent days will no doubt bring forward issues with dirty lambs, so please ensure your lambs are rested (12 hours) and are clean before loading. With the long term prospects for lamb looking strong we still have breeding sheep available for those of you searching for extra ewes. As ever, if you need any advice please don’t hesitate to contact your experienced fieldsmen who will be more than willing to help you.

Organic clean cattle remain around 470p/kg, some 40p/kg ahead of last year, so we cannot be to pessimistic about recent falls in the price. Needless to say we are doing our best to obtain the best deal for all our producers. Unlike last year it really is encouraging to see that organic lamb is subject to a modest premium with prices around 390p/kg, long may this continue! This is in turn boosting the organic store lamb trade so contact the office or your fieldsman if you have any to sell.
